I exercise a lot with my children.  Madeline turned 8 two months ago and Matthew turned 10 yesterday.  Hula hoop, jump rope, basketball, running, swimming – they’re improving athletically by leaps and bounds and their rate of progress is astounding and downright scary.

As far back as I can remember I measured my athletic progress in inches or seconds, and I often scratched and clawed for every one of them.

With each passing day, week, month, and year, my children grow, become more coordinated, faster, and smarter.  It’s so gratifying and inspiring to watch.

I’ve been on this planet for 48 years and I’ve been testing myself physically for at least 40 of them (that’s as far back as I can remember, anyway).  And while I certainly don’t feel old, I think I’m at a point in my life where going faster is not an option.  That’s okay - because I know that for the next 30 or so years, my children, should they desire, will continue to surprise themselves athletically, to knock down barriers, to achieve goals, and I get to watch.  This makes me happy.

And besides, even though it’s doubtful that I can go faster – I can still go fast.  However, after watching my kids at track practice the other day, it’s a good thing that fast is relative.
